What's a Vestry?
Every Episcopal church has a team of elected leaders that govern the parish. It makes decisions about the running of the parish from month to month, gives feedback to the priest about the life of the parish and its members, and helps to provide examples of faithful discipleship to the church members.
The Vestry at St. Mary's Church
At St. Mary's, we have nine members of the Vestry altogether. We elect three members to the Vestry each year, and they serve for a three year term. Also, each year the Vestry elects from among its members three important officers - the Junior Warden, often called the People's Warden; Treasurer; and Clerk of the Vestry. A fourth officer, the Senior Warden, often called the Rector's Warden, is set by appointment of the Priest-in-Charge. All four officers serve one year terms, and the Priest-in-Charge is ex officio Chair of the Vestry.
